Pakistan has officially handed over BSF soldier Purnam Kumar Shaw to India after being in Pakistani custody for 21 days. Shaw, a resident of West Bengal, had accidentally crossed the India-Pakistan international border while on a routine patrol near the Ferozepur sector in Punjab on April 23. Following this, he was apprehended by Pakistani Rangers and taken into custody for questioning.
The Border Security Force (BSF) immediately established contact with the Pakistan Rangers after confirming that Shaw was in their custody. Multiple flag meetings were held between the two sides to discuss his release. During one of these meetings, Pakistan’s representative was absent, delaying the process. In the meantime, tensions between the two countries escalated, with heavy border shelling from the Pakistani side.
After a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, the situation began to de-escalate. With the intervention of Indian authorities and continued diplomatic efforts, Shaw was safely handed over to India through the joint check post at Attari, Amritsar, on Wednesday morning. The process was completed smoothly, following standard protocols and ensuring cooperation between the border security agencies of both countries.
